St.
Patricks Day
|
Who
is St. Patrick?
He was born in 387 in a patrician family. He became a
missionary and educator, built tens of churches, monasteries
and monastery schools. In the distant era of the early
Christianity, he created a clear church hierarchy and
turned Ireland into the main centre of Christian enlightenment
of the period. He was proclaimed apostle by Pope Cellestin
I. There is hardly any other case in European iconographic
tradition of bringing together one Catholic saint and
two Orthodox saints; or perhaps three saints who are both
Orthodox and Catholic praising God from one and the same
altar. What is the explanation? Perhaps it should be sought
in the strong interest in the life and work of St. Kiril
and St. Methodius, which has existed for centuries.
